How Do You WANT to Feel in Your Business?
An eight-minute read by Joanne O'Donoghue
Do you feel the way you want to feel in your business right now?
Perhaps you want to feel calm, confident and in control.
You want to wake up knowing what needs your attention and feeling capable of handling it. You want to enjoy the business you worked so hard to create instead of constantly wondering whether you are doing enough or getting everything wrong.
Instead, you may feel exhausted, stressed and completely overwhelmed.
Your business may have started with an idea, a skill or something you genuinely cared about. You may have imagined having more freedom, creating a better future for your family or building something you could be proud of.
Somewhere along the way, the business became another weight you had to carry.
Now, every day seems to bring another problem, another decision or another task that needs your attention.
You may not even know what needs fixing first.
You only know that you cannot keep feeling like this.

How Do You Feel Right Now?
Does it feel as though everything is piling up on top of you?
There are customers to look after, bills to pay, messages to answer and decisions that cannot be avoided.
There may be staff depending on you, suppliers waiting for answers and people who expect you to know exactly what to do.
At the same time, life outside the business does not stop.
Your family still needs you. Your home still needs attention. Unexpected expenses appear. Relationships need time and there never seem to be enough hours in the day.
You reach the end of the day exhausted, but your mind does not stop when you go to bed.
You replay conversations and wonder whether you said the right thing.
You question decisions you made hours, days or even weeks ago.
You think about the work you did not finish, the people you still need to contact and everything waiting for you tomorrow.
Eventually, you fall asleep, only to wake again an hour or two later and begin going over it all again.
By morning, you are already tired and another full day is waiting for you.
When the Smallest Problem Feels Enormous
When you have been carrying too much for too long, even a small problem can feel like one thing too many.
A customer complaint, an unexpected bill, a staff member calling in sick or a website problem may be enough to push you over the edge.
Someone may ask you a simple question and you cannot think clearly enough to answer it.
You may open your emails, see everything waiting for you and close them again because you do not know where to begin.
You may sit at your desk knowing that you have plenty to do, but feel completely unable to start.
Then you become frustrated with yourself.
You tell yourself that you should be more organised. You wonder why everyone else seems to manage their business better than you do.
You may even begin to question whether you are capable of running a business at all.
The truth is that you are not incapable.
You are overwhelmed.
There is a difference.
What Happens When You Keep Pushing Through?
You keep going because you feel as though you have no other choice.
The bills still need to be paid. Customers still need to be looked after and people are depending on you.
You tell yourself that things will settle down soon.
You believe that once you finish the next big job, fix the latest problem or get through another busy week, everything will become easier.
The quieter week never seems to arrive.
Instead, the problems continue to build.
Tasks begin piling up because you cannot decide which one needs your attention first. You put something off because you do not have the time or energy to deal with it, then you feel guilty because it is still not done.
That guilt adds even more pressure.
You may start working longer hours to catch up, but the longer you work, the more exhausted you become.
The more exhausted you become, the harder it is to make clear decisions.
Small mistakes happen. Important things are forgotten and the business begins to feel even more out of control.
Around and around it goes.
Eventually, everything can begin to feel insurmountable.
You may lose motivation, not because you no longer care about your business, but because you have nothing left to give.
You Do Not Need to Be Told to Work Harder
When a business owner is overwhelmed, telling them to manage their time better, become more organised or change their thinking is not always helpful.
You are probably already working as hard as you can.
You may already have downloaded planners, watched business videos, listened to podcasts and written lists of everything you should be doing.
More information is not necessarily what you need.
Another complicated strategy may only give you more to think about.
You do not need someone standing on the outside telling you that running a business should be easy if you follow the right system.
You need someone who understands that your business is only one part of your life.
You need someone who understands that you can care deeply about your business and still feel tired of carrying it.
You need someone who will listen without judging you or making you feel as though you have failed.
I Know How Hard It Can Be
I am Joanne from Living the Vision and I know how hard it can be to run a small business while dealing with all the pressures life brings.
I know what it feels like to carry responsibility for your family while trying to keep moving forward.
I know what it is like to work wherever you need to work, adapt when life changes and keep going because giving up does not feel like an option.
I also know what it is like to build a business over many years.
It does not happen in a straight line.
There are good days when everything feels possible. There are also days when you question every decision and wonder whether all the hard work is worth it.
Sometimes, you do not need another person telling you what you should be doing.
You need someone to say, "I understand how heavy this feels. You do not have to work it all out by yourself."
You Are Not Alone
Many business owners appear confident and capable on the outside while privately feeling completely overwhelmed.
They smile at customers, reassure their staff and tell their families that everything is fine.
Inside, they may feel as though they are barely holding everything together.
Feeling overwhelmed does not mean that you are a bad business owner.
It does not mean that your business is failing.
It does not mean that you should give up on what you have built.
It may simply mean that you have been trying to carry too many things at once without enough support.
You are a person before you are a business owner.
You are allowed to feel tired.
You are allowed to admit that you do not know what to do next.
You are allowed to ask for help.
What Do You Need Right Now?
You may not need another business program, a longer to-do list or more information about everything you should be doing.
You may need someone to listen.
You may need a safe place to explain what is happening without worrying about whether it sounds organised or professional.
You may need someone to help you look at everything that feels tangled and find the first place to begin.
Not ten steps.
Not a complete business transformation.
Just the first step.
Sometimes, being able to talk honestly about what is wearing you down can make the situation feel slightly less impossible.
It does not solve everything immediately, but it means that you are no longer carrying it completely alone.
How Do You WANT to Feel?
Perhaps you want to feel calm when you think about your business.
You want to know what needs your attention without feeling as though everything is urgent.
You want to make decisions without questioning yourself for days afterwards.
You want to finish work and spend time with your family without your business following you into every conversation, every evening and every sleepless night.
You may want to feel proud of your business again.
That feeling may seem a long way away right now, but you do not have to reach it all at once.
There is no instant solution and I will not pretend that one conversation will fix every problem.
What I can tell you is that you do not have to face everything alone.
At Living the Vision, we want to offer overwhelmed business owners something simple.
A helping hand.
Someone who will listen, understand how difficult things feel and help you find a clear place to begin.
No judgement.
No pressure to have everything worked out.
Just one person walking beside you while you take the first step towards feeling the way you WANT to feel in your business.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I feel so overwhelmed by my business?
Business overwhelm often develops when too many responsibilities, decisions and unfinished tasks continue building without enough time or support. It does not mean that you are incapable. It may mean that you have been carrying too much for too long.
Why can I not switch off after work?
When your business depends on you, it can be difficult to separate business problems from the rest of your life. Your mind may continue reviewing conversations, decisions and unfinished work because it is trying to keep track of everything.
Why am I losing motivation?
A loss of motivation does not always mean that you no longer care about your business. It can be a sign that you are mentally and emotionally exhausted and no longer know which problem to address first.
Do I need another business program?
Not necessarily. More information can sometimes add to the overwhelm. You may need someone to help you understand what is creating the most pressure and identify a clear place to begin.
How can Living the Vision help?
We begin by listening. Together, we can look at what is happening in your business, identify what is weighing you down and find one practical place to start. The aim is not to add more pressure. It is to help you feel less alone and more able to move forward.
